Support that fits into everyday life

Supporting Development in Everyday Life

Children learn, grow and develop skills through the everyday experiences and interactions that shape their world.

From getting ready in the morning and sharing mealtimes to playing, navigating transitions, participating at school and spending time with family, these everyday moments provide valuable opportunities to build confidence, independence and new skills.

At From the Start, our NDIS support focuses on understanding each child's unique strengths, developmental needs and experiences. We work alongside children, families and the important people in their lives to develop practical, individualised strategies that support learning, participation and wellbeing.

Our goal is to help children build meaningful skills in familiar environments, while giving the adults around them the understanding and tools to support their development with confidence.

Who we support

From the Start supports NDIS participants and their families where our services are appropriate to the participant's goals, funded supports and individual needs.

Support may be helpful when

  • Everyday routines are becoming difficult
  • Transitions regularly lead to overwhelm
  • Emotional regulation is challenging
  • Attention, planning, organisation or task initiation are difficult
  • A child needs more support to participate in family or community activities
  • Parents or carers want to better understand their child's development
  • Neurodivergence is part of the child's developmental picture
  • Families want practical strategies they can use outside appointments
  • Parents or carers want to build their confidence and capacity to support their child
  • Multiple professionals are involved and the family would benefit from practical support translating recommendations into everyday life

How we can support your family

Parent & Carer Coaching

Helping parents and carers better understand their child's development, strengths, challenges and everyday support needs.

The focus is on building the confidence, understanding and practical skills of the adults around the child.

Regulation & Everyday Challenges

Helping families understand emotional regulation, co regulation, nervous system responses and the demands that may contribute to overwhelm.

Support focuses on practical changes that can be used during everyday family life.

Executive Functioning

Practical support for the thinking skills children use all day, such as:

  • Attention and working memory
  • Planning and organisation
  • Flexibility and impulse control
  • Transitions and getting started
  • Completing everyday tasks

Everyday Routines & Participation

Support around the moments that shape family life, including:

  • Mornings, getting dressed and leaving the house
  • Mealtimes and bedtime
  • Transitions through the day
  • Community participation and family activities
  • Increasing independence

Understanding Behaviour & Development

Looking beyond the behaviour you can see and considering the developmental, environmental, emotional, sensory, communication and executive functioning factors that may be contributing.

The aim is shared understanding, so the support you put in place fits the child in front of you.

Collaboration

With participant and family consent, and where appropriate, we can work alongside:

  • Occupational therapists, psychologists, speech pathologists and physiotherapists
  • Paediatricians and other medical professionals
  • Educators and early learning services
  • Support coordinators and plan managers
  • NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners and other members of the support team

The From the Start approach

Our focus is not simply on asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?”

We want to understand what may be making the situation difficult and what support will help the child participate, develop skills and feel understood.

01

Understand what is happening underneath

Consider development, regulation, executive functioning, communication, sensory needs, environment and the demands being placed on the child.

02

Support the developing skill

Identify skills the child is still developing and work out how adults can scaffold those skills in everyday situations.

03

Build capacity around the child

Help parents and carers build the confidence, knowledge and practical skills to support their child throughout the week, not just during appointments.

04

Support Through Connection

When children feel connected and understood, they are better supported to learn, grow and build new skills. Adults can provide clear guidance while keeping the relationship at the centre.

What NDIS support with From the Start may look like

  1. 01

    Start with your goals

We talk about your child, their strengths, your current concerns, everyday life and the goals you would like support with.

  2. 02

    Understand the picture

Together we consider the different factors that may be contributing to what is happening. This may include development, regulation, executive functioning, communication, sensory needs, environment and everyday demands.

  3. 03

    Develop practical supports

We identify realistic supports, changes and strategies that fit naturally into family and community life.

  4. 04

    Review and adapt

As children develop and circumstances change, support can be reviewed and adjusted around new goals, strengths and emerging skills.

Our role within your child's support team

Our role is focused on child and family capacity building, developmental understanding, parent and carer coaching, and practical support for everyday participation.

Jodie Moar is not an NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner.

From the Start does not provide Specialist Behaviour Support, undertake NDIS functional behaviour assessments or develop NDIS Behaviour Support Plans.

If your child requires Specialist Behaviour Support, this should be provided by an appropriately registered provider and an NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner.

  • Building parent and carer confidence
  • Supporting communication and interaction
  • Regulation and transitions
  • Increasing independence
  • Helping families identify practical changes to the environment

NDIS funding

From the Start is a registered NDIS provider.

Whether a particular service can be funded through a participant's NDIS plan depends on the participant's individual plan, goals, available funding, funding management arrangements and current NDIS funding requirements.

Before ongoing services commence, we will discuss

  • Fees
  • Service arrangements
  • Cancellation terms

A service agreement will be provided for ongoing NDIS services where required.
