Support

Support that starts with understanding

When something feels challenging for your child or family, it can be helpful to begin with understanding. By exploring what your child is experiencing, what might be making things difficult, and what support they need, we can find more effective ways to build skills, strengthen connections, and create positive changes that work for the whole family.

At From the Start, we look underneath the behaviour, at development, emotional regulation, executive functioning, sensory needs, nervous system state, environment and relationships, then work out what support will build skills and create positive changes.

Behind every behaviour is a child who is still learning and developing

Many parents arrive knowing only that things feel harder than they should, their child is struggling, everyone is becoming frustrated, and the usual advice is not helping. Sometimes, a little extra understanding and support can make a meaningful difference along the way.

Why is my child behaving like this?

You might be wondering why your child:

  • melts down over things that seem small
  • struggles to start everyday tasks
  • seems to ignore instructions
  • becomes overwhelmed quickly
  • finds transitions difficult
  • can manage something one day but not the next
  • seeks constant movement, stimulation or reassurance
  • reacts strongly when corrected
  • knows what to do but struggles to actually do it

There is usually more happening underneath the behaviour than we can see.

Parent & Family Support

Sometimes you do not need another parenting strategy. You need someone to help you make sense of what is happening.

In an individual consultation we look at the whole picture: your child's development, strengths, nervous system, emotional regulation, executive functioning, sensory needs, environment and the situations that are becoming difficult.

YOU MIGHT BE LOOKING FOR SUPPORT BECAUSE

  • Your child experiences big emotions or reactions that can be difficult to understand or navigate.
  • Mornings, bedtime, homework or getting out the door have become exhausting
  • Your child struggles with transitions, flexibility or getting started
  • Your child understands what is expected of them but finds it difficult to put those skills into practice in the moment.
  • ADHD, autism or another neurodevelopmental difference is part of the picture
  • Home and school are seeing very different versions of your child
  • You have tried rewards, consequences, charts and strategies without lasting change
  • You feel that everyday interactions are becoming focused on reminders, instructions or managing behaviour, and you'd like to create more opportunities for connection.

What we work towards

You leave with a clearer understanding of:

  • What may be happening underneath the behaviour
  • What your child may be finding difficult
  • What expectations or environments may need adjusting
  • What skills still need support
  • What you can practically try next

NDIS Support

NDIS support does not have to happen only in a therapy room.

For children with developmental differences or disability, some of the most important learning happens during everyday routines: getting dressed, leaving the house, mealtimes, transitions, play, school and family life.

From the Start can work with parents and carers to understand what is making everyday situations difficult and build strategies that fit naturally into family life.

Support may include

  • Parent and carer coaching
  • Understanding behaviour and regulation
  • Supporting routines and transitions
  • Building caregiver confidence and capacity
  • Understanding sensory and executive functioning needs
  • Helping adults scaffold developing skills
  • Working alongside other members of the child's support team

As a registered NDIS provider, From the Start can support eligible self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants. We recommend checking that the service aligns with your plan and funding before booking.

Helping home and school understand the same child

Children do not always behave the same way in every environment. A child may hold everything together at school and unravel at home. Another may struggle in the classroom but act completely differently one-on-one.

That does not mean anyone is wrong. It usually means the demands, environment, supports and nervous system load are different.

From the Start can help parents and educators create a shared understanding of what the child is experiencing and what support might help.

This may include

  • Helping parents prepare for school meetings
  • Helping adults understand behaviour across different environments
  • Identifying possible triggers and demands
  • Discussing accommodations and adjustments
  • Creating practical regulation and executive functioning supports
  • Helping home and school use consistent language and expectations
  • Supporting communication between families and educators

How I work

Whatever the starting point, the same three ideas shape the support.

Understand what is underneath

Before asking how we stop a behaviour, we look at what may be contributing to it and what is making the situation difficult for the child.

Support the developing skill

Regulation, flexibility, attention, planning, impulse control, communication and problem solving are all still growing. The goal is to support those skills, not simply manage behaviour.

Support Through Connection

When children feel connected and understood, they are better supported to learn, grow and build new skills. Adults can provide clear guidance while keeping the relationship at the centre.

A collaborative approach

From the Start does not replace your child's GP, paediatrician, psychologist, occupational therapist or other treating professionals.

My role is often to help bring the pieces together, helping parents understand what recommendations mean in everyday family life and how developmental knowledge can translate into practical support at home and school.

Not quite sure what you need?

That is completely okay. You might know that something isn't working without knowing whether you need a consultation, a course, a resource or another type of support. Tell me a little about what is happening and I can help you work out the most useful place to start.
